Technical visit to the Lisbon Drainage Master Plan

Friday, 30 August 2024
9:30 AM
Price: 40€
maximum number of participants to be confirmed

Considering the increasing effects ofheavy/torrential precipitation, exponentiated by growing land use, underground construction and climate change effects, the Lisbon Drainage Master Plan (LDMP, or PGDL in Portuguese) aims to better protect Lisbon from flood events.

The actions of the PGDL can generically be embodied in 4 main issues:

- Control at the starting point with the construction of retention/infiltration basins and trench drains;

- Basin transfers - construction of 2 tunnels with an internal diameter of 5.5 m and overall length of approximately 6 Km;

- Reinforcement/renovation of the sanitation network (domestic and rain water sewers);

- Improved knowledge of Lisbon’s sanitation system, as well as its operation/monitoring.

Technical visit to the Plot 2 of the Lisbon Metro extension plan, including the Santos Station

Friday, 30 August 2024
9:30 AM
Price: 40€
maximum number of participants to be confirmed

The Plot 2 of the Lisbon Metro extension features extremely complex geotechnical interventions in a dense urban area, including:

- More than 22m deep anchored/propped reinforced concrete cast in situ bored pile retaining walls for the Santos station accesses and cut & cover tunnel sections;

- More than 22m deep anchored/propped reinforced concrete cast in situ diaphragm retaining walls for cut & cover tunnel sections and ventilation shafts;

- NATM tunnelling construction;

- Underpinning of existing buildings with deep foundation elements interacting with the tunnel construction;

Technical visit to pumped storage Alqueva I and II hydroelectric powerhouses and floating photovoltaic powerplant

Friday, 30 August 2024
9:00 AM
Price: 40€
maximum of 25 participants

Alqueva, located at Alentejo region, is today an example of innovation and sustainability.

The hydropower powerhouse of Alqueva I is located at the Guadiana river, and started operating in 2003, with the objectives of electricity supply, public water supply, irrigation of agricultural land and implementation of leisure and tourism infrastructures. The Alqueva I powerhouse is equipped with two Francis pump-turbine units, which have a total capacity of  2 × 128 = 256 MW in turbine mode.

The powerhouse of Alqueva II is in the right bank of the river and started operation in 2012. This additional powerhouse is also equipped with two reversible units of Francis turbines, with the same power of 256 MW, and an underground hydraulic circuit with independent tunnels with a diameter of 8,5m and 350m long.

The EDP’s pioneer Floating Photovoltaic powerplant, the largest in Europe in a reservoir, inaugurated in 2022, will be another focus of this technical visit. The anchoring and cable system was designed to face the variation of 23 meter of water level. This project can produce 7,5GWh annually, supplying 1,500 homes and avoiding the emission of more than 2,600 tons of CO2.

Technical visit to the expansion works of Metro do Porto

Friday, 30 August 2024
8:00 AM
Price: 40€
maximum of 40 participants

The Metro do Porto lines are a reference all over the world marked by the construction works during the first years of the 21th century.

Nowadays, works are taking place with the expansion of the Yelow Line (Linha D), which will start operating within this year, the fully underground Pink Line (Linha G) and the Rubi Line, which includes  a new bridge spanning the Douro River.

In August, the Pink Line (Linha G), under construction by Ferrovial and ACA in an extremely complex geological environment and in a dense urban area, will be in an advanced stage allowing a visit to this outstanding endeavour.

This new project, located in the heart of Oporto city centre, includes a 3km extension of Oporto light rail system, with 4 underground stations (Liberdade, Galiza, Hospital de Santo António and Casa da Música) and will improve access to areas with significant business, residential, and healthcare components, attracting many passengers and promoting the use of public transportation.”
